GI: The Tunnels of Love
and other lava creations of Santa Cruz
22.08.2007
I have moved over to the island of Santa Cruz and my first day I went on quite a tour of the highlands, including the tours of the Tunnels of Love. You would think with a name like that, it would have wonderful views, beautiful flowers, etc. Instead, I think it should be called the Tunnels of Abusive Relationships, because it is dark, scary, and appears to have no escape. I wondered, while walking alone with my tiny, inexpensive flashlight, how I would find my way back in the long, rocky tunnel. But, how could I have fear, when confronted by a rockwall, when there were tiny, chalk drawn arrows that dirrected me to climb over. Of course, there was no warning that they would rock and make an awful noise as I stood on them. Terrifing, swimming with sharks now seems like a breeze, but it was worthwhile.
I also visted Los Gemelos, which is a profound channel between the freshwater of the highlands and the ocean. It felt wonderful doing laps in solitude. Plus, cute little fish tickled my feet when I sat on one end. There are a number of lava created depressions as well.
The Darwin Station was a bit of a let down, because it was so crowded, but not far behind it a Ecuadorian showed me a nest of iguanas. Beyond that there was an isolated beach, where I dreamt of reading any book in English, which cannot be found on the islands, so bring one with you.
Today I go to swim with the sharks and maybe see the rays. I found the nicest tour guide, he helped me to cook spagetti cheap last night and to find a location with organic, island coffee. Just so you know the resturants with bottles filled with brown liquid are not for tobacco spit, they are natural express to mix with your water, so pass on the Nescafe and enjoy something more flavorful.
